What is the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything?  With a talk entitled “The Architect’s Guide to the Galaxy”, it might just be that Bjarke Ingels will try to answer this stupendously huge question, at least from an architectural perspective… From the new generation of architects who are shaping the world as we know it today, there is perhaps no bigger rockstar than this Danish wunderkind, with projects as diverse as the new World Trade Towers, the Googleplex, the Hyperloop, and a community on Mars! In 2016 Times Magazine named him one of the world’s 100 most influential people. Mia Hanak is the founder and Executive Director at Millenium ART in San Francisco. With the world as her canvas combined with her passion for protecting the planet, she has produced dozens of large-scale immersive design experiences worldwide in partnership with the United Nations, and soon you can see her work come to life on the facade of the iconic Oslo Opera House in January and at the UNESCO Pavilion in Dubai for the 2020 World Expo.

Art can be defined as the expression of human creative skill and imagination, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. But what if art has no physical form or even visual manifestation? Does such art and our responses say something about our potentially unhealthy relationship with material things? And how is modern technology integrated into the art scene and used to power emotional responses and deeper insight into ourselves?

Drue Kataoka is known for her steel sculptures and virtual reality artworks, visual mazes that distort the perception of space-time.  Drue’s art was featured in the first zero-gravity art exhibit at the International Space Station, she is Artist in Residence for Google VR, and YGL & Cultural Leader of the World Economic Forum. Kevin Abosch is an artist residing in New York City. His work is driven by his interest in the nature of identity, value, and human currency.  Abosch’s works in photography, sculpture, installation, and film have been exhibited in museums and civic spaces throughout the world.

Humans have always been evolving with our materials. Accessing oil and plastic ushered in the current level, but at a price. What is the next material that can take us further? Would it solve our problems?  We’ll hear more about two groundbreaking materials: Graphene, a single sheet of carbon atoms combined in a hexagonal structure, 200 times stronger than steel, 100 times more conductive than copper, and extremely flexible: and leather, of all things, that is grown in the laboratory and has never seen the backside of a cow!

Scientists and technologists are good with data, but it is not about data; it is what we do with it. Facts do not change the world, people do.

A Founder Astronaut with Virgin Galactic, Loretta Whitesides is slated to be one of the first women to look down on our home planet during their suborbital spaceflights from 2019. Loretta has been to the bottom of the ocean with Titanic Director James Cameron, worked in the Canadian Arctic on plants that can grow in extreme conditions, and done over 80 weightless flights. Christine Spiten is a Norwegian tech-founder devoted to uncovering the mysteries of the oceans and taking on the challenges that threaten them. She's a co-founder of Blueye Robotics, developing underwater drones for both professionals and private users, making the oceans more accessible. Dr. Bruno Sanchez-Andrade Nuno is an Impact Scientist and currently the VP for Social Impact at the satellite company Satellogic. He has worked as an academic astrophysicist and rocket scientist; on a data-driven hazelnut company in remote Bhutan; at the highest policy levels with the World Bank in several countries, and as Chief Scientist with Mapbox in San Francisco.

The futurists seem to be splitting into two camps: Those who preach utter doom and destruction, and those who sell glory and abundance. While new technologies inspire ambitious hopes, they also stoke existential fears. How do we adapt to an era of rapid technological change? Can and should progress be slowed down?

As a data scientist and social scientist, Rumman Chowdhury’s passion lies at the intersection of artificial intelligence and humanity. She is currently the Global Lead for Responsible AI, creating ethical AI products for Accenture clients. She has been honored as one of the BBC’s 100 Women, Silicon Valley’s 40 under 40, a TedX speaker, and is a fellow at the Royal Society for the Arts. Julia Bossmann is Director of Strategy at Fathom Computing and serves at the World Economic Forum as a council member for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.  She is a McKinsey fellow, Singularity University GSP graduate, and WEF Global Shaper. Samantha Stein is currently the Director of Special Projects and Startup Battlefield Editor for TechCrunch. She looks at emerging tech globally and selects the companies most likely to produce tomorrow's exits. She is also a WEF Global Shaper and Media Leader.

Less than a month ago, we reached Earth Overshoot Day, having used up more resources than our planet produces in a full year. We are currently consuming 1.7 times the planet’s annual output. Where are we heading? Straight into the abyss? Or could there be a different path? Could passion be the magical ingredient for a sustainable future?

Nina Jensen is the CEO of REV Ocean, currently building the world’s largest research and expedition vessel “REV” aiming to improve understanding and search for more sustainable and environmentally responsible solutions for the world's oceans. Jaime Nack, the founder of Three Squares, Inc., has been at the table with some of the most prominent policy-makers and corporations of the world, discussing and advising on sustainability.

Our collective future depends on the ability of our young to navigate an increasingly complex world. "Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world", said Nelson Mandela, a statement one can hardly disagree with. But... what defines a 'good' education? What is really important to learn when the world is changing exponentially? What is the purpose of education? Are the World’s top universities really preparing us for success? How can we change education systems to do more of what we strive for?

Claire Boonstra, a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, founded œ Operation Education in 2012. œ is a Dutch non-profit which creates space for the transformation towards the education we strive for, and develops programs, networks, and architecture to enable educational leaders to lead the change. Ben Nelson is Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Minerva Project, a reinvented university experience that is both educating students with unprecedented results and challenging other universities to step up their own game.

Is education and learning necessarily synonymous? Are learning experiences within a formal education somehow more worth? Are there ways of acknowledging learning outside the conventional system? Are some experiences so pivotal that they outshine the formal structures for learning?

Christopher Schräder, Fellow of the Royal Geo-graphical Society, is the founder and chairman of the 24 Hour Race, a global non-profit fighting slavery. An avid adventurer, he has walked across the Gobi Desert, cycled across Canada for the speed record, and lived with Kazakh Nomads for months. Hari Tamang is a student at the Red Cross Nordic United World College. At the age of 7, the bus Hari was traveling on was destroyed in a terrorist bomb attack. His life changed dramatically, but with this horrifying experience arose a strong determination. His journey since has taken him in unexpected directions. Emma Stoks was a top-ranked student who found that the most meaningful learning happened outside of the classroom. Frustrated with the unequal opportunities offered to students in the standard educational system, Emma now changes the way we view education and learning, co-developing a leadership program for principals and working to help teachers rediscover their purpose.

Since the 1450 invention of the Gutenberg Press, there has never been more of an audience for journalism than now. Yet more has meant less: Our trust in journalism and news is at an all-time low.  We are all spending a lot of time, money and energy in trying to regain trust for mainstream media with, so far, limited success. As you may have registered, “fake news” has become everyday terminology of late…

PJ Thum is co-ordinator of Project Southeast Asia, Research Fellow at Oxford University, and an unspoken human rights activist. In 2017, he and two fellow activists founded New Naratif, a Southeast Asian think tank and media company that promotes democracy, freedom of information, and freedom of expression. Raju Narisetti is Professor of Business Journalism at Columbia University in New York. In a career spanning three decades, he is unique in having started or run major newsrooms on three continents and has helped major news companies like The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and News Corp deal with continuing digital transformations.

Tina Kulow is Director of Corporate Communication for Facebook, with more than 20 years of experience in Public Relations for international companies in tech, internet, and mobile, as well as communication, marketing, and design. Katharina Borchert is the Chief Innovation Officer of Mozilla, previously CEO for Spiegel Online, the leading German news site. Michael Geer spent 5 years leading a large part of social network Badoo, helping the company reach over 70 million users. His main focus is now on social innovation. He is a Board Advisor to several startups, promotes the NY Tech scene and social good in startups with his organization BubbleProof, and helps run AnchorFree to make sure everyone has secure access to information and to keep the Internet uncensored.

Equality is about ensuring that every individual has an equal opportunity to make the most of their lives and talents, and also to recognize that historically, certain groups of people have experienced discrimination. But where are we presently? What is the status of, the challenges to, and the outlook for equality?

Tinna C. Nielsen is taking on some of the world’s biggest companies and organizations, challenging and enabling them to redesign their systems and cultures to be inclusive, leverage diversity, and mitigate unconscious bias. She founded Move the Elephant for Inclusiveness, and the global non-profit peer-to-peer initiative Inclusion Nudges. She is a Young Global Leader by World Economic Forum, serves in their Expert Network, and is Co-Chair of the Global Future Council on Behavioral Sciences. Thulani Madondo is the director and co-founder of the KYP (Kliptown Youth Program) and a resident of Kliptown, a township in Soweto outside Johannesburg, South Africa. Thanks to Thulani and KYP, dozens of kids have now completed high school and gone on to college. In 2013, Thulani was honored as a CNN Hero. Also a Young Global Leader by WEF, Alberto Allemanno is an academic, author, activist, and civic entrepreneur. He is internationally known for his scholarly and public interest work aimed at democratizing political participation, and Global Professor of Law at NYU School of Law and HEC Paris, and the founder of The Good Lobby.

Peace is fragile, and there are forces at play that prefer conflict. And sometimes, the means may be more devious than we suspect.

The World Bank has declared that we are in the midst of a global learning crisis: As someone on the front-line of global learning, delivering education in places like the Kutupalong Rohingya Refugee Camp in Bangladesh, James Song is keenly aware of how current education systems conspire against actual learning. James is the founder and CEO of ExsulCoin, a blockchain technology startup focused on solving the global refugee crisis, and the creator of Exsul, an AI-driven app delivering free basic education. Named one of BBC's 100 Most Inspirational Women, Emi Mahmoud dedicates her time to spreading understanding through poetry and advocacy, particularly for the cause of refugees and disadvantaged communities the world over. She is the reigning 2015 World Poetry Slam Champion and 2016 Woman of the World Co-Champion, A UNHCR High Profile Supporter, a Yale Global Health Fellow, and Leonore Annenberg Scholar, Emi has partaken in multiple White House roundtable discussions and has spoken and taught in 16 countries. To round off this session on the Future of Peace, we’ll hear from  David Rodin, one of the world’s foremost authorities on ethics and organizational culture.  His work has helped to transform the fields of organizational and military ethics, and he advises some of the world’s largest private and public organizations, including several western militaries and security services.
